1) The goal of the writer may be achieve happiness/ Pay his duties/ Be a better person/ Be more generous/ Change his lifestile 2) He was a bad person, maybe selfish, who did horrible things 3)He may have "paid" that, for example, giving away money for charities
The writer's goal in my opinion is to achieve happiness. It also could be to be the best at what he did. About his past maybe he was on jail or he did drugs, and that's why he feels bad. At his present time I think he achieve whatever his goal was and that's why he feels like a champion.
